Home Security - Apartment/Condo Security Techniques

Home security is an important issue whether you are living in a house, apartment or a condo. There are pro’s and cons from a security perspective when consider whether to live an apartment or condo.

Generally speaking, the management of a complex, whether large or small, will usually take responsibility for the security to a point. The management may hire a security company from the private sector to patrol the grounds of the complex. Even if they don’t provide security guards, management will usually at least attempt to keep the grounds secure with proper lighting. Whatever steps they take are not just for the residents, but they help keep up the value of their investment as well making the complex a place people want to live.

Most complexes will not really worry about the security of individual units, which understandably would be quite a difficult task anyway. The units are just spread out over a sizeable area and there are just too many of them. Some mid-level to high end complexes will be fenced in and have a security gate and maybe some type of alarm systems. These are typically for the perimeter of the complex and a few selected buildings. It is just too costly to have management checking on each unit all the time.

The truth is the security of each unit becomes the responsibility of the tenant when they move in. This is no cause for concern as you can do quite a few things fairly easily yourself to have peace of mind while living in your unit.

The first things to do are to keep the windows and doors locked. This may seem somewhat simplistic, but these are some of the most often used ways for burglars to access units. A lot of complexes will ask the tenants to refrain from installing their own security systems in their units. You usually can and should make sure you have proper locks installed on all the entrance points. Occasionally the management will assist in the cost of lock replacement, but even if they do not it is still a good idea since it is your personal security and property you want to protect.

Programs such as neighborhood watch can also be set up in a complex setting, not just in a neighborhood of residential homes. These programs can actually be easier to carry out in some complexes than in tract housing. This can be a real security asset because of the large number of residents in a typical complex. The units are typically easier to see as well.

There are certain behaviors that you can work on personally that will help as well like not letting anyone through the gate you don’t know is a resident even though they may seem nice. Always be aware of your surroundings when walking to your vehicle or your unit especially at night. Being aware of the surroundings is wise for everyone.

One of the best things you can do is to think about some of the basic security issues when you are looking for a place to live instead of after you are already there. If you have a checklist of security items like locks or other basics when you are deciding you may have a chance to get the management to pay for some part even if it is a small part. They want good tenants too.

You do not need to live in fear as you consider your home security, just learn a little about it and take the time to consider the basics. It is never a waste of time. It really doesn’t take that long and the peace of mind is definitely worth it.
